Mumbai: In a major move to ensure passenger safety, the Indian Railways on Monday announced that all new rakes manufactured for Mumbai’s suburban rail network will be equipped with automatic door-closing mechanisms.

The decision comes in the wake of a heartbreaking incident near Mumbra railway station, where at least five passengers tragically died and several others were injured after falling off a crowded local train during the morning rush hour.

The incident took place between Diva and Mumbra stations at around 9:30 am on Monday.

Two trains running in opposite directions passed each other on a curved track.

Passengers reportedly hanging on to the footboards collided with each other, causing several passengers to lose their balance and fall on the tracks.

Earlier, it was reported that 8 people had fallen; later sources revealed that the number of those who fell was 13, of which five were confirmed dead and many others were treated at local hospitals.

Regarding the tragic incident, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Swapnil Dhanraj Neela clarified that the accident was not the result of a train collision, but was caused by passengers travelling on footboards in crowded local trains.

He said that trains often tilt slightly during curved sections of the track, reducing the already small safe distance between two passing rakes.

This tilt and overcrowding are believed to have caused the collision with passengers hanging on the edges.

Mumbra Accident

Given this incident, Central Railway is taking significant steps to improve its safety policies.

It has confirmed that all new rakes under production will include automatic doors, a standard feature in modern metro systems, but still absent in Mumbai local trains.

Additionally, the Railway Board has announced that they are working on redesigning existing rakes in service in the suburban network to install door-closing mechanisms.

These upgrades are aimed at preventing dangerous footboard travel, a long-standing problem on Mumbai’s overcrowded local trains.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, extending condolences to the families of the victims.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote,

“Deeply pained by the incident where 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva and Mumbra stations, unfortunately leading to loss of lives. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We stand with them in this difficult time. The injured passengers had been immediately rushed to Shivaji Hospital and Thane Civil Hospital and are under medical treatment. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. The local administration is closely coordinating all efforts. The Railway department has initiated an inquiry to find out the exact cause of the incident.”

Mumbai’s suburban rail system is the city’s lifeline, carrying over 70 lakh passengers daily.

Yet, with only a few upgrades in the past few years and such a large number of passengers, safety has become a critical issue.

Experts have repeatedly called for infrastructure upgrades, better crowd management and the introduction of modern rolling stock to reduce accidents during the daily commute.

The Railway Board has promised a thorough probe into the Mumbra incident and urged commuters to avoid footboard travel.

Officials have also confirmed the availability of CCTV footage from the route, which could help determine the exact sequence of events.
