Alibag Man Posing as ISRO Scientist Arrested for Cheating Women of Over Rs 1 Crore on Matrimonial Sites
Adarsh Mhatre, 34, from Alibag, has been arrested for allegedly posing as an ISRO scientist and PWD officer to defraud women on matrimonial sites. Police say he used forged documents and fake identities to secure loans for bogus investments, siphoning over Rs 1 crore.
A 34-year-old man from Alibag has been arrested. He is accused of defrauding dozens of women by posing as a senior government official and promising marriage.
Investigators say he used multiple fake identities on matrimonial websites and dating platforms to target educated and financially independent women.
Multiple Fake Identities and Fake Documents
According to the police the accused has been identified as Adarsh Mhatre. Surprisingly Adarsh Mhatre had created at least a dozen fake profiles.
Depending on the circumstances, he would pose as an ISRO scientist or a senior official with the Public Works Department (PWD).
To make his claims appear credible, he allegedly used fake Aadhaar cards and fake official identity documents.
Officials say he carefully gained the trust of his victims. He often developed close relationships with them and then convinced them to invest in property deals.
He allegedly coerced them into taking out large personal loans, which were then transferred to a bank account set up by his cousin.
The money was allegedly spent on gambling and luxury goods.
Police allege that the money was transferred to an account set up by his 21-year-old cousin, Prem Mhatre who has also been arrested. Investigators also claim that a large portion of the money was later spent in luxury hotels and casinos in Goa.
Surprisingly, a total of over Rs 1 crore is believed to have been embezzled. In a case registered at the Rabale police station, a woman from Airoli alleged that the accused using the name “Swapnil Varule,” convinced her to take out a pre-approved personal loan for a purported land investment in Surat. She was subsequently defrauded of Rs 20 lakh.
Police have frozen Rs 14.5 lakh from the account linked to that transaction.
Officials say four other women were similarly defrauded in similar incidents. Worryingly he did not file a formal complaint due to social and personal reasons. He is currently assisting the investigation as a witness.
The total financial impact in these cases alone is estimated to be Rs 97 lakh. Authorities have recovered a large portion of the money allegedly spent in Goa.
Pattern of Targeting Professionals
Senior officials from the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch stated that the accused specifically targeted professionals such as engineers, doctors, bankers and government employees, as well as financially secure widows and unmarried women.
Police believe he exploited emotional vulnerability and trust to commit fraud.
A background check revealed that Mhatre is an SSC graduate and has a criminal history. Several FIRs have been registered against him in several districts, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The investigation is ongoing.
The accused was arrested on February 20 and is in police custody pending further investigation.
Authorities are investigating further leads as they suspect the number of victims may be significantly higher than currently reported.
Police have advised users of matrimonial and dating platforms to thoroughly verify their credentials and exercise caution before making financial arrangements or sharing sensitive personal information.
