Dharavi Redevelopment Project Hits Major Milestone with 150,000 Tenements Set for Rehabilitation
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), spearheaded by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL) under the Adani Group, has achieved a major milestone, having completed more than 50,000 door-to-door surveys and numbered 85,000 tenements.
The project seeks to rehabilitate around 150,000 tenements, turning Dharavi into a contemporary urban centre with enhanced infrastructure and housing.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) aims to rehabilitate 1.5 lakh tenements, transforming the area into a modern urban hub. Led by Adani Group’s NMDPL, the second phase of the door-to-door survey began on April 1, 2024.

According to officials, the increase in rehabilitation numbers is due to vertical growth in structures, with many tenements now extending to G+2 levels.
“At this point, we anticipate the number of tenements getting in-situ rehabilitation to be around 150,000. The final number could vary by 10% as the survey progresses,”
said an NMDPL official.
However, some residents have expressed concerns about surveyors coming at unusual hours, frequently with police escort.
“If they are not doing anything wrong, why do they need police? We have not received any written commitment on our rehabilitation,”
said a local resident.
To speed up the process, DRP authorities have put a strict policy in place: if they fail to collect documents from a tenement three times, the fourth visit will be the last one.
“We cannot afford delays due to resurveys as we are tackling multiple challenges simultaneously,”
said SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
What is the Dharavi Redevelopment Project?
Under the project, eligible residents will receive rehabilitation in Dharavi, while those who do not qualify will be moved to modern townships in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Unlike past slum rehabilitation initiatives, NMDPL has guaranteed that residents will not be housed in overcrowded high-rise buildings but in thoughtfully designed townships equipped with modern amenities.
The redevelopment master plan encompasses essential infrastructure like roads, bridges, power supply, drainage systems, and transport hubs.
Amid ongoing protests and uncertainty, DRP authorities have called on Dharavi residents to engage actively in the survey process to ensure they are included in the rehabilitation plan.
“We seek maximum cooperation from residents to help us expedite the project,”
stated Srinivas.
As Dharavi’s redevelopment finally begins after many years of unsuccessful attempts, officials stress that this project will establish a global standard for slum rehabilitation.
“Once completed, it will redefine urban redevelopment with a human-centric approach,”
said an NMDPL spokesperson.
