Fresh Surge of COVID-19 Cases in Asia Sparks Fears as Mumbai Reports 2 Deaths
Fresh COVID-19 cases emerge in Mumbai amid Asia surge; health officials remain vigilant, advising caution but no panic yet.
The COVID-19 virus, which originated in China, is once again rearing its head and worrying health officials.
Cases of COVID-19 and instances of hospitalisation are increasing in Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Asian countries.
Back home, cases are being seen in Mumbai, but doctors have reassured that the cases are mild and not at the levels seen during the pandemic, which had spread destruction across the globe between 2020 and 2022 and had killed millions.
As per the information available on the Union Health Ministry’s COVID dashboard, 93 active cases have been detected across India as of 18 May.
BMC Executive Health Officer Dr. Daksha Shah clarified that since the coronavirus is endemic in India, seven to nine cases are detected every month across the nation.
The BMC has asked all its medical personnel to be on alert and pay particular attention to fever and sore throat cases in the city.
Two positive cases have been detected at the Breach Candy Hospital on 19 May. Dr. Hemant Thacker, a doctor at Breach Candy Hospital, stated that the patient had just arrived from London and had a severe throat infection and cough.
The second patient, however, had no travel history. Doctors also stated that the symptoms resembled mild flu, but they tested positive for COVID.
Meanwhile, media house Global News has reported a 28% surge in estimated cases by the Singapore Health Ministry, and hospitalisations rose by 30%.
However, doctors in India have reassured that there is no need for panic because the population has developed a fair amount of immunity against COVID, which is termed in medical lingo as herd immunity.
Meanwhile, doctors have stated that it is too early to reconsider re-vaccination in the population.
Doctors also clarified that the COVID-19 vaccination is beneficial in protecting from other viruses as well.
There were reports that there have been two COVID deaths in Mumbai—a 14-year-old teen and a 54-year-old woman.
However, the KEM Hospital staff has clarified that both patients were suffering from serious ailments like kidney failure and cancer, and the deaths were caused by the serious comorbidities.
COVID is a viral infection and can be fatal when the patient is also suffering from other serious ailments like blood pressure issues, diabetes, or nephrotic conditions.
The population above sixty is at the highest risk.
The DG of Health Services chaired a meeting with officials from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Central Government hospitals, the Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) division, the Disaster Management Cell, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to discuss the evolving situation.
VIDEO | On fresh COVID-19 cases in India, Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar says, "Two people have been found positive in Mumbai. I appeal to people not to panic. If needed take advice from the family doctor and take precautions."

The Union Health Ministry said,
“A robust system for surveillance of respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, also exists in the country through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR. The Union Health Ministry remains vigilant and proactive in monitoring the situation closely, ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to safeguard public health.”

Basoda 2026 Wishes, Images, Messages, Greetings, Quotes, Shayari and Instagram Captions
Basoda, also known as Sheetla Ashtami, is a Hindu festival dedicated to Maa Sheetala, the goddess believed to protect devotees from diseases and infections. Celebrated eight days after Holi, the festival involves offering cold food prepared the previous day and seeking blessings for good health and well-being.
Basoda is also known as Sheetla Ashtami. It is also known locally as Basoda, Budha Basoda or Basiaura. This festival is dedicated to Mother Sheetla who is considered the goddess of health and cleanliness. It is believed that fasting and worshipping on this day provides relief from diseases and keeps people healthy.
Sheetla Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Chaitra, eight days after Holi. This year, Basoda will be celebrated on March 11th. Worshiping Mother Sheetla on Basoda day provides relief from smallpox, measles and other infectious diseases.
It is believed that Sheetla Mata is extremely fond of coolness. Therefore food is prepared the day before Basoda (Sheetla Saptami). On the morning of Ashtami the same cold and stale food (such as curd, rabri, rice, puris and parathas) is offered to the Mother. After this all the members of the family accept the same stale food as Prasad.
