IMD issues red alert for Mumbai: City receives heaviest rainfall on record in May
IMD issues red alert as Mumbai records its heaviest May rainfall ever, triggering flood warnings and disruptions.
Mumbai | May 27, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning that parts of Mumbai are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday, May 27. The alert comes after record-breaking monsoon activity that made May 2025 the wettest May in the city’s history.
The alert, which was yellow till yesterday, has now been re-upgraded to red. It is part of the IMD’s warning system, indicating the possibility of severe weather, which may lead to flooding, traffic disruptions and potential infrastructure pressure.
What does a red alert mean?
A red alert is the most severe weather warning issued by the IMD, prompting authorities to take action and advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. The IMD has warned that Mumbai and adjoining areas are likely to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds up to 60 kmph.
The warning will be in effect till 8:30 am on Wednesday, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Record rainfall: May 2025 will go down in history books
The red alert in Mumbai comes at a time when Mumbai is receiving more rain in the month of May than it receives in the entire season. The Colaba observatory has recorded 439 mm of rain this month – far more than the previous record of 279.4 mm recorded in May 1918. The Santacruz station recorded 272 mm of rain, which is close to its own May record of 387 mm recorded in 2000.
Heaviest-Hit Areas So Far
The IMD’s rainfall data from midnight Sunday to 11:00 am Monday shows several parts of South Mumbai receiving massive volumes of rain:
Nariman Point Fire Station – 252 mm
Ward A Office – 216 mm
Colaba Pumping Station – 207 mm
Eye Hospital, Don Taki – 202 mm
Worli – 171 mm
C Ward (Marine Lines) – 180 mm
Even though it was pouring rain, the IMD made it clear that this doesn’t qualify as a “cloudburst” since no weather station recorded more than the 100 mm/hour mark needed for that label.
The monsoon has arrived ahead of schedule and in full swing
The monsoon made its earliest entry into Mumbai on May 26, the earliest in 70 years – just days after it hit the coastal areas of Kerala and Ratnagiri.
Usually, we expect the monsoon to start in Mumbai around June 11.
Officials have said that this early arrival is due to some favourable weather patterns and a well-defined low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea.
Flight, Train Disruptions and Commuter Advisory
The red alert has had a ripple effect on daily life:
IndiGo Airlines issued a public advisory, asking passengers to account for longer travel times due to waterlogged roads to the airport.
Local trains, especially on the Central and Harbour lines, faced delays due to track flooding.
Traffic snarls were reported at multiple choke points across the city including Sion, Kurla, Andheri, and Byculla.
IMD Outlook: More rain, relief possible by Wednesday
While Mumbai is expected to receive heavy rainfall throughout the day on Tuesday, the IMD says the intensity may reduce slightly by Wednesday.
However, given the saturated ground and already high water levels, even moderate rainfall could trigger localised flooding.
Authorities on high alert
BMC disaster response teams are on high alert, and pumps have been set up in flood-prone areas.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas, and keep an eye on official updates.

Massive Traffic Jam on Khopoli-Bor Ghat Stretch Due to Weekend Rush
In a surprising turn of events a massive traffic jam occurred on the Khopoli-Bor Ghat section on Saturday, December 13 due to a heavy rush of vehicles heading towards Pune. The congestion caused significant delays for commuters.
Traffic movement was severely affected on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway with vehicles crawling for several kilometers.
Authorities reported heavy congestion on the Bor Ghat stretch between Khopoli and Khandala. Long queues of vehicles were observed from the Shingroba Temple area to the Dashturi traffic check post.
Traffic came to a near standstill at key bottlenecks such as the Amrutanjan Bridge and Battery Hill leaving motorists stranded for extended periods.
Traffic was also extremely slow from the Khandala Tunnel to the Khandala Overbridge. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace in this section. On the old Khandala-Lonavala road reports indicated that queues of vehicles stretched for approximately 7 to 8 kilometers further exacerbating the situation for commuters.
To manage the situation teams from the Raigad Traffic Police, Pune Rural Traffic Police and Highway Traffic Police were deployed to the scene. Authorities stated that the congestion was primarily due to the heavy weekend traffic with many people from Mumbai traveling towards Pune and surrounding hill stations. Traffic violations and a lack of lane discipline by some motorists also contributed to the gridlock.
Authorities said that the traffic situation was expected to improve gradually and urged commuters to be patient, follow traffic rules and cooperate with the authorities to help ease the congestion.

Frequent Pipeline Leaks Lead to 50% Water Cut in Thane Until December 15
Thane residents will face a 50% water supply cut after multiple leaks were found in an old pipeline supplying water from Pise Dam to the Temghar treatment plant. Repairs are underway and normal supply is expected to resume by December 15.
In a worrying development residents of Thane will face a 50% reduction in water supply for the next few days. Several leaks have been discovered in a major pipeline that supplies water from the Pise Dam to the Temghar Water Treatment Plant.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has reportedly started repair work immediately. Officials say the repairs are expected to be completed by December 15.
According to municipal officials the problem began earlier this week when the old pipeline was damaged during excavation work being carried out by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) near Kalyan Phata.
Initially a 30% water cut was implemented after the first leak was detected and repaired. However officials later discovered two more major leaks in the same section of the pipeline forcing the corporation to increase the water cut to 50 percent across the city.
Atul Kulkarni a water supply official at TMC, explained that the pipeline which carries water from the Pise reservoir to the Temghar treatment plant is several decades old and prone to frequent breakdowns.
He said,
“We found two more major leaks in the same pipeline and to prevent further water wastage we decided to repair them immediately. Since the pipeline is old the repair process is expected to take several days.”
The damaged pipeline, which has a diameter of approximately 1,000 mm has been damaged twice in a week due to ongoing excavation work. Municipal officials acknowledged that the repeated damage has caused hardship to residents many of whom are now relying on water tankers and bottled water to meet their daily needs.
To manage the reduced supply the TMC has implemented a zoning system across Thane. Under this system water supply will be provided in 12-hour batches to different zones until the repair work is completed. Officials explained that the zoning system aims to ensure the equitable distribution of the limited water available during the repairs.
The municipality has appealed to residents to use water judiciously and cooperate with the administration until normal supply is restored. Furthermore officials have assured that the repair work is being carried out on a priority basis and efforts are being made to prevent further leaks in the affected area.
