Is January 15, 2026 a bank holiday in Mumbai?
Summarise This Article With

This date was not part of the original annual bank holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or the state government. It was officially added on January 7, 2026.

The Maharashtra government declared this special public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 to facilitate the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

What this means for banking:

This holiday has been notified under the Negotiable Instruments Act. This means that all public and private sector banks in Mumbai city and Mumbai suburban districts are mandated to remain closed. This also ensures that bank employees can exercise their right to vote in the civic elections.

For Mumbaikars this means that physical branch services, including cash deposits, check clearing and locker access, will not be available on that day.
