LPG Truck Catches Fire on Sion-Dharavi Link Road in Mumbai; Series of Explosions Light Up Night Sky

Residents near Dharavi bus depot in Mumbai were shell-shocked after a truck carrying gas cylinders caught fire. The truck was moving on the Sion-Dharavi Link Road adjoining the Nature Park, at around 9:50 PM, when the mishap happened.

The night skies were lit up with fire shooting into the sky along with deafening explosions of more than 20 LPG cylinders. Several vehicles in the close vicinity were damaged, although mercifully there was no loss of life.

However, the incident has once again spawned questions about the safety protocols when transporting LPG cylinders.

LPG cylinders are filled with Liquefied Petroleum Gas under pressure. LPG is highly inflammable and, in the event of a fire, are literally bombs which have a devastating effect. Investigators suspect that the fire was caused by a leaking gas cylinder and the gas ignited due to a spark.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but onlookers shuddered at the thought of what would have happened if the incident had occurred on a congested road or near a residential area. The consequences would have been frightening.

Fire Brigade officials who responded to the fire declared the fire as Level 1 and stated that more than 20 LPG cylinders had exploded. The fire officials also stated that there was a slum located in the close vicinity, and the fire damaged a number of vehicles which were parked nearby.

Santosh Sawant, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, told media house HT:

“An LPG gas cylinder in the lorry exploded. These cylinders are typically used for home deliveries, and one exploded, leading to the fire’s escalation. We dispatched five fire engines in accordance with the Level II protocol. We have not yet received information on any injuries.”

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrific scenes, and one resident of PMGP Colony, Salim Agwan, stated that his house was barely 150 feet away from the exploding cylinders. He described the explosions as much akin to a series of bombs exploding one after another.

Agwan said:

“The whole night sky was lit up due to the explosions and flames. Some of the cylinders were flying off after the blasts, and residents were worried they would fly into their homes and cause fires there.”

However, there are conflicting accounts of how the fire started, with one account from MLA Jyoti Gaikwad from the Dharavi Assembly constituency blaming a car that caught fire to have triggered the fiery incident. The MLA also blamed unauthorized parking by cars in a no-parking zone for the incident. Jyoti also confirmed that no one was killed or injured in the incident.

Mumbai Coastal Road’s Game-Changing Vehicular Underpass Set to Slash Commute Times by Over an Hour

Mumbai Coastal Road's Game-Changing Vehicular Underpass Set to Slash Commute Times by Over an Hour

The Mumbai Coastal Road, officially named the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road, is an eight-lane, 29.2-kilometre-long expressway designed to connect Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north.

The project is nearing completion, with its only vehicular underpass (VUP) expected to open in May.

This underpass, located beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli and stretching nearly half a kilometre, will allow vehicles to bypass congested intersections and offer direct access to the coastal road from Prabhadevi.

The underpass bisects into two sections, with one leading to South Mumbai, while the other arm, which is elevated over a bridge, will connect with Bandra. The new link is expected to reduce congestion at key intersections and will also cut down travel time from two hours to less than 40 minutes.

The 4.5-km-long and 17-m-wide Sewri-Worli connector is also nearing completion, with its ramp ending before the JK Kapur Chowk, enabling motorists to connect with Marine Drive or Bandra via the coastal road.

The vehicular underpass is the only underpass of the project. The Coastal road also features more than 16 pedestrian underpasses (PUPS) allowing for the safe passage of pedestrians towards the seaside boulevard.

According to BMC officials, the underpass has been designed considering the burgeoning traffic shortly. It will provide hassle-free access from the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor to either the western suburbs or South Mumbai.

A BMC official was talking to the Indian Express and stated,

“This underpass will complete the last missing link of the coastal road. The ongoing works are in the final stages, and they will be completed by early May, soon after which we intend to open the underpass for motorists. Once this tunnel is opened, motorists coming from Dadar can enter the coastal road directly, without having to exit from the Worli or Haji Ali interchanges,”

Subsidiary work like painting lane markings, installation of street lights, and plastering of the sidewalks is going on at a brisk pace and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Couple Caught in Indecent Act on Mumbai Bus; Conductor Booked, Video Triggers Public Outrage

A viral video is making the rounds on social media and is spawning a heated debate on the etiquette that must be maintained while using public amenities. The viral video depicts a young couple who were engaged in sexual acts while travelling on public transport.

The incident happened on a bus travelling from Panvel to Kalyan, and a motorist recorded the indecent act by the commuters on a moving AC bus. The video showed the couple engaged in sexual acts in the back seat of a moving civic-run AC bus on Sunday evening.

The incident sparked uproar, and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has ordered an enquiry against the bus conductor, who was duty-bound to prevent the incident. The conductor is facing charges of negligence and failing to intervene.

NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde has not responded to the controversy.

According to a statement by Anarjit Chauhan, the conductor of the bus where the incident happened is facing the heat for not intervening in the alleged despicable act. According to Anarjit, the bus was almost empty and was travelling from Panvel to Kalyan.

When the bus stopped at an intersection, the act of the couple, who are reportedly in their twenties, was spotted by a motorist who filmed the incident and sent it to some senior NMMC officials.
The act could face charges under the purview of Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which stipulates a jail term of three months and/or a fine of Rs 1,000 for any indecent act in a public place. The transport authority has not approached the police on the matter.

An obscene act in a public place can attract legal action. At the time of going to press, the civic body hadn’t approached the police.
