The Maha Tapasvi Acharya Shri Mahashraman Ji Park in Marol is an example of how determination and perseverance can transform even the most barren landscape into lush green forests.

The park is located in Marol and spread across an area of 3.5 acres, and was inaugurated by district guardian minister Ashish Shelar on Sunday.

The park is replete with a play area for children, recreational spaces, and restrooms.

The Minister also urged that more such parks based on the urban forest concept in Mumbai must be created.

The benefits of the park are already being accrued, and according to BMC, there has been a reduction in temperatures by 2 degrees Celsius.

Just two years ago, there was not even a thorny shrub on this plot in Marol, but today it has been transformed into the Maha Tapasvi Acharya Shri Mahashraman Ji Garden, a 3.5-acre lush urban forest.

While inaugurating the park, Shelar said it was another example of how collaborative efforts can change urban spaces into eco-friendly zones that can weather the vagaries of climate change.

The Minister also highlighted the need for citizen participation, which led to the fruition of the urban forest parks across Mumbai.

The Minister also stated that more such parks are in the pipeline, and the aim is to ensure that the temperatures in the city are reduced by 3-4°C over the next five years.

The plot’s metamorphosis was effected with half of the plot being classified as a park, while the other half was a property of the Marol Cooperative Industrial Estate and was funded by the District Planning and Development Committee.

The park was chaperoned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the industrial estate. The World Resources Institute (WRI) chipped in with its experience, while the services of Studio Pipeelikaput, an architecture, urban design, and ecological landscaping firm, were also extensively used.

Plantation tasks were kicked off on the plot in March 2024, and due diligence was given to identify native plant species from surrounding areas. The project was handled by Neha Chavan of Studio Pipeelikaput, who, along with her team, scoured the Aarey forest, Sanjay Gandhi National Park (Borivali), and Ranibagh (Byculla) to make sure that ecological conformation was ensured.

Talking to the media house Hindustan Times, Neha Chavan said,

“We incorporated over 100 species in the garden, including six varieties of bamboo and fruit-bearing trees like mango, jackfruit, papaya, and banana to attract birdlife.”
