The Hindi–Marathi divide is getting sharper in Mumbai, and incidents of physical abuse are occurring with alarming regularity just because a person is unable to speak Marathi.

A recent incident saw a couple deny payment to a pizza delivery boy simply because he couldn’t speak Marathi. A video that soon went viral shows a woman berating a pizza delivery boy just because he was not able to speak in Marathi.

As reported by NDTV, the incident unfolded on Monday at the Sai Radhe building in Bhandup, a Mumbai suburb.

The pizza delivery boy, named Rohit Lavare, was delivering pizza to a house in Bhandup. A woman who received the pizza started talking in Marathi, and upon learning that the pizza boy was not well-versed in the language, she began berating him.

The delivery boy started filming the encounter, which only increased the woman’s anger. She scolded him sharply, demanding that he stop recording their exchange. She also taunted him and said that she could record and would refuse to pay for the pizza.

She stated that she would pay only when the delivery boy spoke in Marathi.

The delivery boy, however, did not flinch and asked,

“How could you force anyone to speak in Marathi?”

The lady retorted, saying,

“It is like this here, and if you want to get paid, you will have to speak in Marathi.”

NDTV reports that, in the end, the delivery boy had to return empty-handed without getting paid for the pizza.

One X user wrote,

“As a Marathi, I apologize to all Indians. This is not us.”

Another netizen wrote,

“This linguistic virus started in Tamil Nadu, then moved to Karnataka, and now in Maharashtra. All these states are neighboring each other.”

A third user lamented,

“What a shameless couple. Harassing a poor hardworking delivery guy. On a flimsy pretext, they are trying to get that pizza for free. Happy to see that the guy too is not relenting.”

The rains in Mumbai for the past few days have disrupted life.

Due to continuous rains in Mumbai for the last 2 days, Powai lake started overflowing on Tuesday morning.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said that due to heavy rains in the catchment area, the water of the lake started overflowing around 6 am.

Powai Lake, which is mainly used for industrial and non-drinking water purposes, has now reached its maximum capacity of 5.45 billion liters.

This lake is used to supply water to places like Aarey Milk Colony but it is not used for drinking water, but the water coming out of the lake gives us a good idea of how much rain has fallen in the city.

The excess water has now started flowing into the Mithi River, which is its natural outlet.

Spread over an area of 2.23 square kilometres, the lake was originally constructed in 1890 and is located about 27 kilometres from the BMC headquarters.

With Powai lake overflowing, the water level of other lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai has also increased significantly.

The BMC provides the city with about 3,950 million litres of drinking water every day from seven lakes – Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi.

As of June 18, the total water stock in these seven reservoirs was 1,47,488 million litres, which is about 10.19% of their full capacity. Of these, Modak Sagar has the highest water level at 27.20%, followed by Vihar at 35.64% and Tulsi at 34.83%.

On the other hand, major sources like Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna are still lagging behind, at just 5.90% and 9.07% respectively.

The water level is being closely monitored as it has a direct impact on the city’s daily water supply.

For now, the rains have brought some relief to the city’s water storage situation, but much more rain is expected in the coming weeks to ensure there is enough water for the rest of the year.

Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra and India’s commercial and entertainment hub, is currently experiencing sharp fluctuations in fuel prices.

Known for its fast-paced lifestyle and economic vigour, the city’s fuel consumption directly impacts its daily operations.

Petrol, diesel, and CNG rates in Mumbai are currently (as of June 18, 2025) Rs 103.50, Rs 90.03, and Rs 77, respectively.

These rates directly impact the daily lives of Mumbai residents, as much of their travel and transportation rely on petroleum products.

Mumbai is home to countless industries, commercial establishments, and households that rely heavily on diesel for various applications.

The sharp increase in diesel prices, to Rs 90.03, is a major concern for these entities, as it could impact critical sectors such as transportation, logistics, and manufacturing.

On the other hand, natural gas vehicles, especially CNG vehicles, are not far behind, with CNG rates reaching Rs 77.
