On November 7, 2006, a series of explosions ripped through the First Class Compartments of the Mumbai Suburban trains, killing 209 people and injuring 800.
There were seven explosions, all occurring during the evening rush hour when the trains were packed with commuters returning home from work.
Initial investigations revealed the involvement of a Pakistan-based terror organisation in collaboration with SIMI (the Students Islamic Movement of India). Later, it was revealed that a group called Indian Mujahideen was also involved.
The bombs went off simultaneously at different locations, indicating that pencil timers were used. The bombs were placed in specially improvised pressure cookers to maximise the impact.
The explosions were so powerful that they ripped the double-layered roofs of the carriages and the side walls. Most of the fatalities occurred in the First Class compartments where the bombs were placed.
People waiting on the platforms to catch trains and passengers on the passing trains were also killed. The blasts happened between 6:23 pm and 6:28 pm within five minutes.
