According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has recorded its rainiest August in the last five years. Apart from this, the Santacruz Observatory has recorded more than 1,184 mm of rain between August 1 and 31. This figure is almost double the city’s normal monthly average (about 566 mm in the suburbs and 482 mm in the island city).

The rainfall this month was just 70 mm short of breaking the 67-year-old record of 1,254 mm set in August 1958. The last time Mumbai received such heavy rainfall in August was in 2020. When Santacruz recorded 1,240 mm of rain.

Most of the rain this year fell between August 16 and 19. But with less rainfall, the city received more than 800 mm of rain in just four days. Not only this, on August 19 alone, 300 mm of rain was recorded in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai and 361 mm in the western suburbs within 24 hours. It is the highest rainfall in a day since 2017. Also, officials said that the city received up to 200 mm of rain in six hours on the morning of August 19.

By the end of August, the Santacruz Observatory had recorded 2,494 mm of rain this monsoon. It had already exceeded its seasonal average of 2,319 mm. Also, during this time, Colaba recorded about 1,659 mm of rain against the seasonal average of 2,095 mm. Apart from this, heavy rains have also brought Mumbai’s seven lakes, which are the main source of drinking water—close to full capacity. In it 13.9 lakh million liters (96.3%) of water is stored.

Forecast ahead

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane for September 3-4, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rains at some places. An orange alert has also been issued for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, indicating the possibility of very heavy rains.

The exceptional rains of August have once again reminded Mumbai of the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather changes, from the driest August on record in 2023 to the second wettest August in 35 years this year.

Silver rates in Mumbai today are as follows. 10 grams of silver costs Rs 2,549. For 100 grams, it is Rs 25,490. For 1 kilogram, the price is Rs 2,54,900. These prices change often. It is better to check the rate on the day you want to buy.

People in Mumbai buy silver for many reasons. Some buy it for jewellery. Some people keep silver coins and bars as savings. Silver is also used in small idols and puja items. Sometimes, families buy silver as gifts during festivals like Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya.

The price of silver in Mumbai is usually very close to the international price. But local taxes and making charges can make the price a bit higher. Also, the price can change from one shop to another in Mumbai. The rates are mostly the same in Zaveri Bazaar, which is the main market for gold and silver in the city.

People often look at both gold and silver rates before buying. While gold rates are higher (given for 10 grams), silver remains more affordable for most families. Right now, silver prices are not as high as gold, but they keep moving up and down.

Mumbai has many jewellers who sell silver in different forms. Still, it’s good to buy only from trusted shops and ask for a proper bill. Some people prefer buying certified silver bars or coins for better resale value.

In short, silver is a popular choice in Mumbai for small investments or daily use. Rates keep changing, so always check the latest prices before buying.

In Mumbai, many people buy gold for weddings and festivals. It is also used as an investment. Some keep gold as savings for the future. But gold prices in Mumbai can be higher than smaller cities because of taxes, transport, and demand.

Gold shops in Zaveri Bazaar and other old markets are always busy. People come for jewellery, coins, and bars. Most shops follow the morning gold rate. Some update rates in the evening if markets change a lot.

These days, gold rates are at record highs. This worries both buyers and jewellers. Buyers wait, hoping for lower rates. Sellers see less business. But big events like Akshaya Tritiya still see some people buying, even when prices are high.
