Mumbai Tragedy: Four Laborers Suffocate to Death in Water Tank, One Survivor Battles for Life

In a tragic incident, four laborers were suffocated to death in a freak accident while cleaning a water tank. The incident happened at an under-construction site in Mumbai’s Nagpada area on Sunday.

According to Police, a fifth worker survived the accident and has been admitted to a hospital. The Police have opened an investigation into the accident and are trying to find out if there was any negligence on the part of the construction company.

According to a civic official who was talking to the news agency, five workers had entered the tank but fell unconscious. The workers were later rescued by the fire brigade personnel and rushed to the JJ Hospital where four workers were declared dead while the fifth is alive and undergoing treatment.

The dead has been identified as

  • Hasipal Shaikh (19)
  • Raja Shaikh (20)
  • Jiaulla Shaikh (36)
  • Imandu Shaikh (38)

The fifth person named Purhan Shaikh (31), is undergoing treatment at the Ward No 4 of the JJ hospital.

The incident happened when workers went into a water tank, which was not in use for a long time, at 12.30 pm in the premises of the Bismillah Space building on Dimtimkar Road. An accidental death report (ADR) has been filed by the police and investigations are on to know if there was any lack of safety protocols being followed.

The JJ Marg Police official told PTI,

“A probe has begun to find out lapses, if any, on the part of those who hired the five and whether safety protocols were adhered to. Action will follow as per the findings of the probe,”

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers and Fire Brigade officials are also investigating the incident along with the local police.

Heart-wrenching scenes could be seen at the JJ Hospital’s casualty ward when the family members and relatives of the victims came to receive the bodies, which were handed over after post-mortem.

Family members were grieving and also angry, stating that no safety protocols were followed when the workers entered the water tank, which was not cleaned for the last two years, leading to the accumulation of toxic and poisonous gasses, which led to the death of the victims by suffocation.

Doctors at the JJ Hospital stated that the cause of death was exposure to toxic fumes inside the tank. The lone survivor was brought, and he was suffering from severe breathlessness and tremors. He is said to be out of danger now.

The Doctors also stated that one of the victims had white patches on his lower extremities, suggesting exposure to chemicals. Another victim had abrasions and injuries on the back of his head.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Suresh Sagar detailed how the incident happened,

“There was a water tank in the basement, where some plywood material was stuck. One of the laborers went down to clear those and unclog the tank when he suffered suffocation. Four labourers went inside to rescue him and suffered suffocation. They were later brought out by the Mumbai Fire Brigade,”

Suresh Sagar also stated that since the building was private, it is beyond the jurisdiction of BMC. However, the police were notified after the incident.

Mumbai Coastal Road’s Game-Changing Vehicular Underpass Set to Slash Commute Times by Over an Hour

Mumbai Coastal Road's Game-Changing Vehicular Underpass Set to Slash Commute Times by Over an Hour

The Mumbai Coastal Road, officially named the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road, is an eight-lane, 29.2-kilometre-long expressway designed to connect Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north.

The project is nearing completion, with its only vehicular underpass (VUP) expected to open in May.

This underpass, located beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli and stretching nearly half a kilometre, will allow vehicles to bypass congested intersections and offer direct access to the coastal road from Prabhadevi.

The underpass bisects into two sections, with one leading to South Mumbai, while the other arm, which is elevated over a bridge, will connect with Bandra. The new link is expected to reduce congestion at key intersections and will also cut down travel time from two hours to less than 40 minutes.

The 4.5-km-long and 17-m-wide Sewri-Worli connector is also nearing completion, with its ramp ending before the JK Kapur Chowk, enabling motorists to connect with Marine Drive or Bandra via the coastal road.

The vehicular underpass is the only underpass of the project. The Coastal road also features more than 16 pedestrian underpasses (PUPS) allowing for the safe passage of pedestrians towards the seaside boulevard.

According to BMC officials, the underpass has been designed considering the burgeoning traffic shortly. It will provide hassle-free access from the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor to either the western suburbs or South Mumbai.

A BMC official was talking to the Indian Express and stated,

“This underpass will complete the last missing link of the coastal road. The ongoing works are in the final stages, and they will be completed by early May, soon after which we intend to open the underpass for motorists. Once this tunnel is opened, motorists coming from Dadar can enter the coastal road directly, without having to exit from the Worli or Haji Ali interchanges,”

Subsidiary work like painting lane markings, installation of street lights, and plastering of the sidewalks is going on at a brisk pace and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Couple Caught in Indecent Act on Mumbai Bus; Conductor Booked, Video Triggers Public Outrage

A viral video is making the rounds on social media and is spawning a heated debate on the etiquette that must be maintained while using public amenities. The viral video depicts a young couple who were engaged in sexual acts while travelling on public transport.

The incident happened on a bus travelling from Panvel to Kalyan, and a motorist recorded the indecent act by the commuters on a moving AC bus. The video showed the couple engaged in sexual acts in the back seat of a moving civic-run AC bus on Sunday evening.

The incident sparked uproar, and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has ordered an enquiry against the bus conductor, who was duty-bound to prevent the incident. The conductor is facing charges of negligence and failing to intervene.

NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde has not responded to the controversy.

According to a statement by Anarjit Chauhan, the conductor of the bus where the incident happened is facing the heat for not intervening in the alleged despicable act. According to Anarjit, the bus was almost empty and was travelling from Panvel to Kalyan.

When the bus stopped at an intersection, the act of the couple, who are reportedly in their twenties, was spotted by a motorist who filmed the incident and sent it to some senior NMMC officials.
The act could face charges under the purview of Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which stipulates a jail term of three months and/or a fine of Rs 1,000 for any indecent act in a public place. The transport authority has not approached the police on the matter.

An obscene act in a public place can attract legal action. At the time of going to press, the civic body hadn’t approached the police.
