Mumbai's air quality reaches 'unhealthy' levels; many areas enter 'severe' and 'hazardous' zones

Mumbai woke up on Wednesday December 3, 2025 to rapidly deteriorating air quality.

The city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reportedly reached 195 on the US AQI scale. This reading places Mumbai in the “unhealthy” category.

Worryingly this level poses health risks for vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, asthmatics and those with heart or lung disease.

This increase is primarily due to PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations which are well above safe limits.

Notably PM10 levels reached 147 µg/m³, while PM2.5 reached 115 µg/m³. It is particularly dangerous because of its ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

While the citywide AQI is a cause for concern several areas in Mumbai recorded even more dangerous numbers.

The Wadala Truck Terminal reportedly reported an AQI of 425 which falls in the “hazardous” category the highest risk band in the AQI system.

Other areas, such as Chembur’s BS Ambedkar Nagar, Bandra Kurla Complex, Malad and Mazgaon, also recorded “severe” air quality, with AQI values ranging between 201 and 236.

Even areas classified as “unhealthy” like CSIA, Deonar, Kurla, Kandivali East and Powai remained dangerously close to the “severe” limit.

Experts say that construction activity in Mumbai and surrounding cities is rapidly worsening the situation.

The main reasons for this are the expansion of the metro rail, road redevelopment, coastal projects and the construction of high-rise buildings in place of old settlements.

Furthermore increased vehicle emissions and stagnant winter air have further trapped pollutants on the ground.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has confirmed that it has issued stop-work notices to more than 50 construction sites.

This is believed to be the main reason for the rising dust levels.

Meanwhile weather conditions remain largely stable. According to the India Meteorological Department clear skies are expected in Mumbai.

The maximum temperature will be around 33°C and the minimum temperature will be around 16°C. However calm weather and light winds may delay the dispersion of pollutants.

Many areas are now experiencing winter pollution levels comparable to Delhi.

Health experts are advising residents – especially those with sensitive skin – to limit outdoor activities wear masks during peak pollution hours, and use indoor purifiers until the situation improves.

Basoda is also known as Sheetla Ashtami. It is also known locally as Basoda, Budha Basoda or Basiaura. This festival is dedicated to Mother Sheetla who is considered the goddess of health and cleanliness. It is believed that fasting and worshipping on this day provides relief from diseases and keeps people healthy.

Sheetla Ashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Chaitra, eight days after Holi. This year, Basoda will be celebrated on March 11th. Worshiping Mother Sheetla on Basoda day provides relief from smallpox, measles and other infectious diseases.

It is believed that Sheetla Mata is extremely fond of coolness. Therefore food is prepared the day before Basoda (Sheetla Saptami). On the morning of Ashtami the same cold and stale food (such as curd, rabri, rice, puris and parathas) is offered to the Mother. After this all the members of the family accept the same stale food as Prasad.
