Disturbing news is emerging from Mumbai where three students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay lost their lives in a road accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Lonavala on Thursday morning.

It is reported that the accident occurred around 8:30 AM. The car carrying the students allegedly went out of control while traveling at high speed.

According to preliminary investigations by the Maharashtra Highway Police a matter of grave concern the vehicle overturned after the driver lost control. It is reported that the occupants sustained fatal injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Omkumar Borse (23) from Nashik, Lay Deshbhratar (20) from Nagpur and Shreyansh Sharma (22) from Jaipur. All three were students at IIT Bombay and were part of a group of six friends who had gone to visit Lonavala.

According to reports the group of students made a spontaneous plan for an early-morning outing after staying awake late into the night.

They were returning to Mumbai in separate vehicles when the accident occurred near the Panvel exit on the expressway.

According to police sources the driver of the car was attempting to overtake a truck while traveling at high speed. During this maneuver the vehicle allegedly lost its balance, crashed, and overturned multiple times before colliding with a roadside barrier.

The impact was so severe that the car was extensively damaged, and its occupants sustained critical injuries.

Crucially, emergency services were alerted via an emergency call, and rescue teams arrived at the scene immediately.

The injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital in Navi Mumbai, where doctors pronounced them dead.

Authorities have registered a case regarding this incident and have initiated an investigation. However preliminary inquiries suggest that high speed is a primary contributing factor to the accident.

Additionally officials are examining other aspects, such as seatbelt usage, the condition of the vehicle and whether the airbags deployed during the accident.

To reconstruct the sequence of events the police have also requested CCTV footage from the surrounding area. According to reports the camera nearest to the accident site was non-functional, which could potentially complicate the investigation.

It is reported that the truck driver involved in the incident fled the scene.

A case has been registered against him on charges of negligence and speeding. Efforts to locate and apprehend him are currently underway.

The entire IIT Bombay community has been left in deep shock by this tragic incident.

Expressing their grief, fellow students and faculty members have remembered the deceased as exceptionally promising and talented students who harbored great dreams for both their academic and personal lives.

The investigation remains ongoing and it is expected that officials will release further details once the technical reports and post-mortem results are available.
