Massive Traffic Jam on Khopoli-Bor Ghat Stretch Due to Weekend Rush
Summarise This Article With

In a surprising turn of events a massive traffic jam occurred on the Khopoli-Bor Ghat section on Saturday, December 13 due to a heavy rush of vehicles heading towards Pune. The congestion caused significant delays for commuters.

Traffic movement was severely affected on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway with vehicles crawling for several kilometers.

Authorities reported heavy congestion on the Bor Ghat stretch between Khopoli and Khandala. Long queues of vehicles were observed from the Shingroba Temple area to the Dashturi traffic check post.

Traffic came to a near standstill at key bottlenecks such as the Amrutanjan Bridge and Battery Hill leaving motorists stranded for extended periods.

Traffic was also extremely slow from the Khandala Tunnel to the Khandala Overbridge. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace in this section. On the old Khandala-Lonavala road reports indicated that queues of vehicles stretched for approximately 7 to 8 kilometers further exacerbating the situation for commuters.

To manage the situation teams from the Raigad Traffic Police, Pune Rural Traffic Police and Highway Traffic Police were deployed to the scene. Authorities stated that the congestion was primarily due to the heavy weekend traffic with many people from Mumbai traveling towards Pune and surrounding hill stations. Traffic violations and a lack of lane discipline by some motorists also contributed to the gridlock.

Authorities said that the traffic situation was expected to improve gradually and urged commuters to be patient, follow traffic rules and cooperate with the authorities to help ease the congestion.

In a worrying development residents of Thane will face a 50% reduction in water supply for the next few days. Several leaks have been discovered in a major pipeline that supplies water from the Pise Dam to the Temghar Water Treatment Plant.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has reportedly started repair work immediately. Officials say the repairs are expected to be completed by December 15.

According to municipal officials the problem began earlier this week when the old pipeline was damaged during excavation work being carried out by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) near Kalyan Phata.

Initially a 30% water cut was implemented after the first leak was detected and repaired. However officials later discovered two more major leaks in the same section of the pipeline forcing the corporation to increase the water cut to 50 percent across the city.

Atul Kulkarni a water supply official at TMC, explained that the pipeline which carries water from the Pise reservoir to the Temghar treatment plant is several decades old and prone to frequent breakdowns.

He said,

“We found two more major leaks in the same pipeline and to prevent further water wastage we decided to repair them immediately. Since the pipeline is old the repair process is expected to take several days.”

The damaged pipeline, which has a diameter of approximately 1,000 mm has been damaged twice in a week due to ongoing excavation work. Municipal officials acknowledged that the repeated damage has caused hardship to residents many of whom are now relying on water tankers and bottled water to meet their daily needs.

To manage the reduced supply the TMC has implemented a zoning system across Thane. Under this system water supply will be provided in 12-hour batches to different zones until the repair work is completed. Officials explained that the zoning system aims to ensure the equitable distribution of the limited water available during the repairs.

The municipality has appealed to residents to use water judiciously and cooperate with the administration until normal supply is restored. Furthermore officials have assured that the repair work is being carried out on a priority basis and efforts are being made to prevent further leaks in the affected area.
