WATCH: Mumbai’s new underground metro flooded just days after inauguration, services on Aqua Line 3 affected
Mumbai’s Aqua Line 3 metro floods days after launch, disrupting services on newly inaugurated underground route.
Mumbai | May 27, 2025 – The recently launched Aqua Line 3 metro corridor in Mumbai suffered a major setback on Monday when heavy rains led to flooding at two major stations – Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli.
The station was shut down just 17 days after its much-awaited launch.

Commuters shared videos on social media capturing the chaotic scene, with water gushing down stairs like a waterfall, escalators stalled, and water entering metro coaches.
Several commuters were left stranded after the sudden suspension of services between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli at 1:30 pm, reports Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).
RCC wall collapse behind flooding
In an official statement, the MMRC confirmed that the flooding was caused by the collapse of a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) wall at an under-construction entry/exit point along Dr Annie Besant Road.
“Incessant and sudden rainfall caused water to rush in from an adjacent utility, leading to seepage in an under-construction section not open to the public,”
the statement said.
Train services between Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk have been temporarily suspended, though metro operations between Aarey JVLR and Worli continue.
The MMRC assured that full services will resume once structural assessment is complete.
Social Media Erupts as Floodwater Enters Coaches
Commuters took to social media to express shock and frustration.
“The scene at Acharya Atre Chowk resembled a waterfall,”
One passenger posted, while another shared footage of water pooling around the train doors at Worli.
Escalators were reportedly submerged up to the second step, and commuters had to wade through knee-deep water, navigating stairways slick with debris.
A halted train with passengers on board at Worli remained stationary for 20 minutes before doors were opened at the next station.
Questions over quality of infrastructure
The recent flooding of Mumbai’s Rs 37,276-crore underground metro line, which was touted as a major transformational step for the city’s transport, has raised serious concerns about the quality of construction, watertightness and the system’s preparedness for the monsoon season.
“This is an embarrassment. If a brand-new metro station can’t handle the first rain, what can we expect for the rest of the monsoon?”
questioned a transport activist.
The incident also sparked criticism online, with some users sarcastically referring to the corridor as the “actual Aqua Line.”
Widespread monsoon impact
Heavy rains on Monday caused widespread disruption across Mumbai, marking the earliest monsoon arrival in Maharashtra in 35 years.
Train services on the Central and Harbour lines were affected due to waterlogging at Masjid station, and there were reports of a road collapse at Kemps Corner.
Nariman Point received 40 mm of rain in just one hour, with other major areas such as Grant Road and Colaba also receiving heavy rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised Mumbai’s alert level from ‘yellow’ to ‘orange’, with heavy to very heavy rains predicted to continue till Tuesday morning, along with thunderstorms and winds of up to 60 km/hr.
Authorities on high alert
After the IMD predicted more rains in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, city authorities have initiated emergency measures.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is advising residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and avoid flood-prone areas.
Meanwhile, the MMRC has announced that a thorough investigation into the flooding incident at Aqua Line stations is underway and that they will take steps to strengthen weak construction sites along the corridor.

After this all the members of the family accept the same stale food as Prasad.
