Tactical Timeout: Players Who Retired Out In IPL History

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most popular T20 cricket league in the world. The tournament is a perfect stage for players from around the world to shine on with their cricketing skills.

Since its inception, the IPL has increasingly entertained viewers with its unique rules. For instance, wide-ball and no-ball reviews, second ball changes, and “impact player” rules are some of the unique guidelines that make the game interesting.

One such fascinating rule is the “retired out” rule. While it is a rarely used rule, it can change the course of the game. The rule allows a batsman to declare himself retired out in any innings while batting. As a result, he will be counted out, and a new batter can take the crease. This is counted as a dismissal when calculating the batting average.

Interestingly, the retired out batter can come out to bat again in the innings, pending an approval from the umpires and captain of the opposition. It’s a rule that comes handy for teams from a strategic point of view, making the game exciting. Similarly, such thrilling experiences can also be enjoyed on various online platforms where fans are guaranteed of a roller-coaster ride. One can visit Puntit website for an interesting adventure in cricket.

While they happen on rare occasions, let’s examine all five instances in which players have retired in the IPL history so far.

1. Ravichandran Ashwin, RR vs LSG, Wankhede- 2022

Ravichandran Ashwin was the first player in the history of the IPL to retire himself out in the IPL. The instance came while he played for Rajasthan Royals in a match against Lucknow SuperGiants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10. The all-rounder, who came in to bat at No.6  chose to bow out of the field in the 19th over of the first innings after scoring 28 runs off 23 deliveries. This paved the way for Riyan Parag, who helped the team reach 165/6. The strategy worked for the Royals as they eventually won the game by 3 runs in a thriller.

2. Atharva Taide, PBKS vs DC, Dharamsala, 2023

Atharva Taide followed the suit in the next edition of the IPL. Playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS), batter decided to retire himself out during the team’s chase against Delhi Capitals at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. The left-handed batter chose to leave the field during the mammoth 214-run chase against Delhi Capitals (DC).

After the end of the 15th over, Taide added 55 runs off 42 balls. This is when he decided to make way for Jitesh Sharma, who, however, could not make an impact getting out on duck in the next over. PBKS could manage only 198/8 and lost the game by 15 runs.

3. Sai Sudharsan, GT vs MI, Qualifier 2, Ahmedabad, 2023

When the Gujarat Titans (GT) took Mumbai Indians (MI)  in the crucial Qualifier 2 game of IPL 2023, Sai Sudharsan became the third player in tournament’s history to use the retired out rule. Playing a side role to Shubman Gill, who smashed129 off 60, Sudharsan aided in a 138-run partnership for the second wicket. adding 43 runs off 31 deliveries till the 19th over.. However, Gujarat felt they needed a quickfire at the other end. Therefore, they made the call to send in Rashid Khan by retiring out Sudharsan. As a result, GT posted a mammoth total of 233/3 and later defeated MI by a huge margin of 62 runs.

4. Tilak Varma, MI vs LSG, Lucknow, 2025

Tilak Varma utilized the rule of retiring out in IPL 2025. During the 16th match of the tournament, MI was made to chase a gigantic 204-run target against LSG in Lucknow. MI were at 86/3 when Verma came in to bat. He was struggling to make a connection with the ball and managed only 25 runs off 23 balls in the run chase. Coming in to bat at No. 5, the left-handed batter made an exit from the crease in the 19th over. As the asking rate climbed over 15, Mitchell Santner came out to replace him. Experts believe the MI management took the call too late as they fell 12 runs short of the target and lost the game.

5. Devon Conway, PBKS vs CSK, Chandigarh, 2025

Chennai Super Kings opener Devon Conway is the latest entrant in the list of players who retired out. The decision came in a match against PBKS in IPL 2025. The batter slammed 69 runs off 49 deliveries before leaving the crease in the 18th over to make way for Ravindra Jadeja. However, the move did not bear fruit for CSK as they failed to chase down a colossal  target of 220 runs in the match and fell short by 18 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav Purchases Luxury Apartments Worth ₹21.11 Crore in Mumbai's Deonar-Chembur Area

Suryakumar Yadav, or SKY as he is lovingly known among cricket fans, and his spouse Devisha have just bought two apartments in the Deonar-Chembur area for a stupendous sum of Rs 21.11 crores.

As per the documents accessed by Square Yards, the deal was finalized earlier in March. For the unversed, Suryakumar Yadav, who is a star of the Mumbai Indians and is playing in IPL 2025, has long been associated with the Deonar-Chembur area, and, naturally, he and his better half will make the area their permanent residence.

The star cricketer has just purchased two luxury apartments at Godrej Properties-developed Godrej Sky Terraces project in Deonar, near Chembur, in north-eastern Mumbai.

The area was acquired by Godrej Properties from members of the Kapoor family in 2023 for a sum of Rs 100 crores.

The area was also the location of the legendary actor and director Raj Kapoor’s former bungalow, known as RK Cottage.

SKY and the Deonar-Chembur area have been synonymous with one another since he is already residing in a posh location in the Deonar-Chembur area.

His childhood was spent in Anushakti Nagar, which is also the residential quarters for the workers from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and other allied nuclear energy facilities in the area.

The two apartments purchased by Suryakumar have a total carpet area of 4,222.76 square feet and are located on consecutive floors.

The property, being developed by Godrej Sky Terraces, envisages three- and four-bedroom apartments and is being developed by Godrej Properties.

Deonar is located in Eastern Mumbai under the Mumbai Suburban district. The nearest railway station is Chembur on the Harbour Line and is connected by the Mumbai Monorail and major roads like the Eastern Express Highway and Sion-Panvel Expressway.

Suryakumar Yadav is one of the most versatile, forceful, and pioneering T20 batsmen. He is best known for his 360-degree stroke play.

He reached the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings for batters and was crowned the ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year.
