The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is one of the oldest museums in the country and is situated within the ramparts of Byculla Zoo, Byculla East. Its genesis can be traced to 1855, when it first came into existence.

However, it was promoted as a repository of decorative and industrial arts before being re-christened the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in honor of the philanthropist.

The first museum in Mumbai, then Bombay, was the brainchild of John Elphinstone, and he created the Central Museum of Natural History, Economy, Geology, Industry, and Arts.

However, it was closed within two years, and in 1858 the collection was transferred to Town Hall. In 1858, a committee was created and tasked with raising funds to create a new building for the museum.

George Birdwood was appointed the museum curator, and Bhau Daji Lad and Jaganath Shunkerseth were appointed to the committee to raise funds for the museum.

The Byculla Zoo is today known as Veer Jijamata Udyan, or the Rani Baug. It is a lush 60-acre zoo in the middle of Mumbai. The zoo was built in the colonial era in 1861 and opened as a botanical garden, then known as Victoria Gardens.
