Donald Trump Administration Floats Cash Payouts to Greenlanders to Push Break From Denmark, Sparking NATO Backlash
The Donald Trump administration is reportedly considering offering direct cash payments to Greenland’s residents to encourage them to break ties with Denmark and join the United States. The controversial proposal has triggered strong backlash from Denmark, Greenland’s leadership, and several NATO allies.
The Donald Trump Administration’s endeavor to acquire Greenland, which is governed by Denmark, has entered a new and more controversial phase.
The US government is now going to offer cash dole-outs to every Greenlander, equalling $10,000 to $100,000, in a bid to encourage them to sever their link to Denmark and become a part of the United States.
This was reported by Reuters, which cited multiple sources.
Greenland is a semi-autonomous and sparsely populated Danish territory. It only has a population of 57,000 people, which includes a sizeable number of the indigenous Inuit community.
However, it has abundant natural resources, which are still to be exploited. The idea of giving a payout to the Greenlanders is now in its initial stage, and the details are still sketchy.
The officials of the administration whom the sources have quoted contend that the final amount could be in the tune of $6 billion.
However, the proposal has provoked a furious reaction from both Copenhagen and Nuuk, which insist the island is not for sale.
The plan to buy the island is one of the proposals, along with diplomatic initiatives, since the use of force will have disastrous consequences because Denmark and Greenland are both NATO members, which have multiple treaties signed with the US.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in response to the proposal, wrote on his Facebook post,
“Enough is enough … No more fantasies about annexation”
The actions of the Donald Trump Administration have also alarmed other NATO member states. On Tuesday, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain, and Denmark issued a joint statement reiterating that the future of the island rests solely with Denmark and Greenland, and that any US interference would be counterproductive.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that acquiring Greenland is crucial for US security against China and Russia. Donald Trump was interacting with reporters on Air Force One and stated,
“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark isn’t going to be able to do it.”
The talks between Denmark and the US have now become even more important, according to the Reuters report, especially after US military action in Venezuela and the capture of the nation’s president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife from their home.
Donald Trump’s actions have been derided by the Democrats, who stated that the US President wants to incite conflict without taking full Congressional approval.
Experts also state that there are other options, such as Greenland becoming independent and then allowing the US to operate military bases, similar to arrangements in South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and several other countries across the globe.

Paola Belmonte Viral Video Controversy: How a Decade-Old Leak Resurfaced to Spark Fresh Outrage
An old intimate video allegedly involving Bolivian journalist Paola Belmonte has resurfaced online, reviving a controversy from 2013. The clip, leaked without consent, once led to legal action and a landmark court ruling in her favour.
The internet has been sizzling with an alleged viral video of Paola Belmonte and her instructor.
Read on to know about this story.
The genesis of the whole controversy can be traced to an intimate video of Paola Belmonte with a gym trainer, which went viral in 2013 and was construed as infidelity towards her husband, Martín Sotomayor.
Therefore, it is surprising that a video almost a decade old has once again resurfaced on social media and is precipitating both interest and controversy around the name of the Bolivian journalist and presenter.
Who is Paola Belmonte?
For the unversed, Paola Grisel Belmonte Gómez is a Bolivian journalist and presenter and has vast experience appearing on television. She has enamoured her audience with her fresh, down-to-earth, and relatable style. However, the leak of the private video landed her in controversy and made her a punching bag for criticism and rebuke.
The purported video was circulated on the internet in 2013, and she was immediately labelled as being unfaithful to her husband. The material was leaked without her consent and soon found its way onto social media and adult websites. The viral video caused a huge uproar in Bolivia. At that time, Facebook and Twitter were the main avenues that helped the video go viral.
Within hours, Paola Belmonte was trolled mercilessly, and there was increased public scrutiny of her private life. At that time, Belmonte and Sotomayor were already separated and in the process of divorce. Despite this fact, the video continued to generate intense public interest. Paola, however, was not intimidated and appeared alongside her husband to show that she would not be cowed down by blackmail and threats.
In 2014, Paola Belmonte filed a lawsuit to protect her privacy, and the Departmental Court of Justice of La Paz ruled in her favour, recognising that the video had been published illegally and without her consent.
The person who leaked the video was identified as Oscar Medinacelli Rojas, who even tried to extort $20,000 from the presenter in return for not making the video public. The court ruled that the leaked private video constituted a violation of her fundamental rights and became a benchmark for future litigation involving the protection of personal data and the dissemination of intimate content.

Is the Minneapolis ICE Shooting Putting World Cup 2026 at Risk? Fans Rethink Travel Over Safety Fears
The fatal ICE shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis has sparked global concern ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fans from several countries are reportedly cancelling travel plans, citing safety fears and uncertainty, raising questions about whether the US can reassure international visitors.
The ICE shooting of an unarmed US woman in Minneapolis has spawned a huge backlash, and it does not augur well for the forthcoming World Cup in 2026.
Supporters from many countries, especially from England, Brazil, and South Africa, who were dreaming of being a part of the noise, color, and pure World Cup madness are now cancelling tickets en masse in the thousands as the excitement for the sporting jamboree has turned into fear.
Sold tickets are increasingly being put up on resale websites, while travel bookings have slowed to a snail’s pace. Many fans contend that football trips are more about feeling safe, calm, and joyful, but they have become increasingly suspect.
Many fans had been saving for years to book flights and see their favorite teams play in North America.
However, after the fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis, they are now having second thoughts, and many have shelved their plans to attend the 2026 World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the world and will host 48 nations. It was shared by three nations and should have been a grand event.
However, things have turned worse after the ICE incident, and fans no longer feel safe visiting the US right now.
A 37-year-old unarmed woman who was a US citizen and a mother of three was shot dead when she was in her car by an ICE agent during an immigration stop. The videos of the event soon became viral on social media, and it clearly shows the ICE agent firing three shots through the windscreen of the victim’s car.
The incident evoked a keen sense of revulsion and fear in equal measure. No fan in his right state of mind would dream of flying in the midst of this melee in the US.
Fans across the globe reacted on social media, and one X user stated,
“Been waiting since 2018 to see England play in the US. But nah, mate. After seeing that ICE clip, I’m not dragging my kids into that.”
Another fan from South Africa posted a picture of the World Cup ticket he had bought with a title,
“I’m gutted. But I’m out. Football is love, not risk.”
Another user on X said:
“I’d rather watch from home than explain to my mom why I thought this was safe.”
What has angered the fans most was the silence of FIFA in the whole controversy, and one fan put it very aptly,
“FIFA wanted packed stadiums. We wanted a dream trip. But this is not the safety brochure we signed up for.”
