The ICE shooting of an unarmed US woman in Minneapolis has spawned a huge backlash, and it does not augur well for the forthcoming World Cup in 2026.

Supporters from many countries, especially from England, Brazil, and South Africa, who were dreaming of being a part of the noise, color, and pure World Cup madness are now cancelling tickets en masse in the thousands as the excitement for the sporting jamboree has turned into fear.

Sold tickets are increasingly being put up on resale websites, while travel bookings have slowed to a snail’s pace. Many fans contend that football trips are more about feeling safe, calm, and joyful, but they have become increasingly suspect.

Many fans had been saving for years to book flights and see their favorite teams play in North America.

However, after the fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis, they are now having second thoughts, and many have shelved their plans to attend the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the world and will host 48 nations. It was shared by three nations and should have been a grand event.

However, things have turned worse after the ICE incident, and fans no longer feel safe visiting the US right now.

A 37-year-old unarmed woman who was a US citizen and a mother of three was shot dead when she was in her car by an ICE agent during an immigration stop. The videos of the event soon became viral on social media, and it clearly shows the ICE agent firing three shots through the windscreen of the victim’s car.

The incident evoked a keen sense of revulsion and fear in equal measure. No fan in his right state of mind would dream of flying in the midst of this melee in the US.

Fans across the globe reacted on social media, and one X user stated,

“Been waiting since 2018 to see England play in the US. But nah, mate. After seeing that ICE clip, I’m not dragging my kids into that.”

Another fan from South Africa posted a picture of the World Cup ticket he had bought with a title,

“I’m gutted. But I’m out. Football is love, not risk.”

Another user on X said:

“I’d rather watch from home than explain to my mom why I thought this was safe.”

What has angered the fans most was the silence of FIFA in the whole controversy, and one fan put it very aptly,

“FIFA wanted packed stadiums. We wanted a dream trip. But this is not the safety brochure we signed up for.”

Schools Pause Lifetouch Class Photos Amid Social Media Allegations Linking Parent Company to Epstein-Connected Investor

Photography company Lifetouch is the latest casualty of the Epstein saga, and Epstein-linked rumors have led to US schools putting on hold class pictures, citing concerns about student data and safety.

The move to cancel the annual class pictures was triggered by social media posts that linked the school photography company Lifetouch to a billionaire investor who had cultivated a relationship with the convicted sex offender earlier.

Online posts alleged that Lifetouch, which is owned by Shutterfly, was acquired by Apollo Global Management in 2019. Apollo’s then-CEO Leon Black had previously maintained financial ties with Epstein.

However, Lifetouch has denied all the allegations and claimed that no pictures of students were ever accessible to outside investors.

Apollo Global Management had bought Lifetouch’s parent company, Shutterfly, in a $2.7 billion deal. The deal was concluded in September 2019, a month after Epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial.

Epstein was facing charges of sex trafficking.

Black was the CEO of Apollo at that time.

Later in March 2021, Black stepped down as the CEO, stating that he wanted to devote more time to his family, health, and other matters.

Some schools in Malakoff, which is a small town in Texas, said in a statement to Associated Press that they have put on hold a scheduled student picture day after objections from parents.

The statement added that the district has decided to keep all the students’ pictures within the house for the remainder of the year.

It also stated that officials are reviewing the available options for the next school calendar, 2026-2027.

Lifetouch chief executive Ken Murphy said in an Instagram post,

“No Lifetouch executives have ever had any relationship or contact with Epstein, and we have never shared student images with any third party, including Apollo.”

It also stated that Apollo and its funds did not have any role in the daily operation of the company and had no access to student images.

Apollo has also said in a statement that Epstein’s role was as an advisor on estate planning, tax matters, charitable giving, and the running of his family office for Black, and that he did not invest in or provide any services to Apollo.

Lifetouch is a prominent U.S. school photography company, and the distress of the parents is understandable because the company’s name appears at two distinct places in the Epstein files.

Lifetouch operates in countless schools and photographs millions of children each year.

Its services include individual and class photos and storing the images digitally, which has led to fears that the data could be compromised.

The company’s name appears in one of the released documents, which has been labelled “electronic communication” under the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

There are multiple entries within the document, and one entry reads,

“LIFETOUCH NSS ONLINE P EDEN PRAIRIE, MN.”

Leon Black’s name also surfaced in the files as late as 2025. A handwritten letter was sent by Black to Jeffrey Epstein on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

Another excerpt from an email, this time by Jeffrey Epstein to Leon Black, dated Nov. 2, 2015, begins as

“I never want to have any more uncomfortable money moments with you; I find it very distasteful…”

Lifetouch’s functionality is receiving increased attention because it not only takes photos of children at school, but also stores student information, including whether families have purchased photos, as clearly stated on the official website.

However, the Associated Press reported that a review by the news organization of at least 1.7 million documents released by the US Department of Justice found no evidence that Epstein or his associates accessed Lifetouch images.

A huge controversy erupted after a video at the ongoing AI Impact Summit went viral on social media.

A Galgotias University professor, Neha Singh, claimed that the robot dog, named “Orion”, was created in-house by the institution’s Centre of Excellence.

However, netizens quickly found out that it was a Chinese robot dog that the university was claiming as its own.

In the video, Professor Neha Singh claimed that the robot dog was created by the university and was deployed to conduct surveillance and monitoring duties across the university campus.

However, the machine closely resembled a commercially accessible quadruped robot mass-produced by Unitree Robotics.

Online users severely criticised the university for falsification.

Later, after the backlash, Galgotias University issued a clarification and stated that it had never claimed that the robot dog on display was created in-house.

The university also added that it regularly obtained advanced technologies from different locations, including China, Singapore, and the United States, to give its students firsthand exposure to AI technologies.

The university also claimed that the robot was a tool that facilitated students to experiment, learn about its capabilities, and give them a better understanding of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Unitree Robotics mass produces four-limbed robots, which have been nicknamed “robodogs” and can mimic animal movements and are employed for a wide range of applications, such as hurdle navigation, industrial inspection, research applications, and entertainment.

The robodogs manufactured by the company are very popular across the world because they are reasonably priced and rub shoulders with Boston Dynamics’ quadruped robot, Spot.

The episode has also caused a political storm, with the leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, labelling the AI summit a “disorganised PR spectacle”.

Gandhi also alleged that Chinese products have been showcased while the Indian data has been compromised and put on sale.

He also added that the present Modi government has made India a laughing stock globally.
